Exploring New Methods of Beach Maintenance in Texas

The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) is pleased to announce the annual Texas Bays and Estuaries Meeting (TBEM) for 2009. The meeting will occur in Port Aransas, Texas and will have both a general session (Tuesday and Wednesday) and a special session on Sargassum (Wednesday afternoon and Thursday)

Purpose:

 

The meeting will focus on work being done in the bays, estuaries and near-shore Gulf of Mexico.  It provides an opportunity for scientists working in the Texas coastal zone to share information, results and insights into our diverse coastal environment.  Both natural and social science research is welcome.
 

Venue:

 

The meeting will be held at the Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas.  Talks will be held in the Auditorium located in the Visitor’s Center. Information on the Institute and directions can be found at http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/visit/maps-and-directions.html.
 

Program:

 

The meeting will start at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 4: 30 p.m.  The meeting is intended to be informal and student-friendly.  There will be awards for best oral student presentation.
 

Abstract:

 

Abstracts and registration are due 9 April 2009. Late abstracts may not be accepted. Please limit your abstract to 250 words inclusive of title and affiliation. Margins should be one inch on all sides. Use a Times New Roman font, size of 12, single space. Titles should be in bolded normal case with authors and their affiliations listed afterwards. The name of the presenter should be underlined.

 
 
Abstracts must be submitted electronically. Please indicate:
1. the type of presentation (oral or poster), and 2. if the presenter is a student. All students giving an oral presentation will automatically be considered for the best presentation award. Please specify whether you submitting to TBEM or the Sargassum Symposium. If you make us guess, you may not like the result.

Sample title format:

The effect of boat propeller scarring on genetic variation in a subtropical seagrass species. Patrick D. Larkin, Krista L. Heideman, Dana D. Burfeind and Gregory W. Stunz, Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.

- Poster Presentations: A limited number of poster venues will be available. Posters will need to fit in a 48” X 48” space. Pins and tacks will be provided.

- Oral presentations:  Each talk will allotted 15 minutes inclusive of 2-3 for questions. A digital projector is available and internet connections are available via wireless in the auditorium. If you plan to use this during your talk, please use the wired connection available at the podium. In the interest of time, speakers should arrange to give their talks to the session chair prior to the start so that they can be loaded onto the computer. A dedicated room for this will be available at the meeting. If you need an ancient technology like a slide projector or overhead projector, email us well in advance so we can contact a local museum.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Registration:

The registration fee for this conference is $40.00 and includes adminssion to both the TBEM meeting and the Sargassum symposium.

Registration fees after April 9, 2009 or at the door will be $50.00.

Housing:

 

Port Aransas has a wide variety of local accommodations for attendees who wish to overnight on Thursday or Friday.  A group rate is available at the Plantation Suites in Pt. Aransas (361-749-3866 or 1-877-836-3866)).  Attendees should reference the “UTMSI April meeting’ when reserving rooms and should reserve rooms as soon as possible due to the limited numbers that are available. This special rate will expire one month prior to the meeting. The Holiday Inn Express in Pt. Aransas has a limited number of state rates available as well.
 

Social events:

 

Mixers and social events will be scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday evening. More details will be provided as the time draws near. A cash bar will be available for both events. No food is covered at this event, but meeting registrants are eligible for a special rate (1 cent, cash, no change will be made) at the BBQ dinner on Tuesday night.
