ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE INSTITUTE AWARDED NSF GK-12 GRANT FOR OUTREACH PROGRAM 


The University of Texas at Austin, Environmental Science Institute has been awarded a grant from NSF's GK-12 initiative to develop environmental science outreach programs that will partner K-12 teachers with graduate students in the sciences. The principal investigators are Ken Dunton (Marine Science Institute), Jay Banner (Geological Sciences), Ian Dalziel and Katherine Ellins (Institute for Geophysics), and James Barufaldi (Curriculum and Instruction). The $1.52 million project will support nine graduate fellows for three years to work on projects involving field activities for K-12 students and teachers in Texas watersheds and estuaries, and on ocean-going vessels; the Outreach Lecture Series; and summer workshops in targeted interdisciplinary subject areas.
