Former Marine Science Institute Student Receives High Honor

The National Water Research Institute announced today that Dr. Nancy N. Rabalais will receive the 2008 Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize.  Dr. Rabalais is an expert in marine hypoxia and the effects of human-induced changes in water quality, particularly the long-term environmental impacts of excess nutrients and petroleum contamination on marine ecosystems. She received her PhD from The University of Texas at Austin, working under the supervision of Dr. James N. Cameron at the Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas.  She is now the Executive Director and a Professor of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium in Chauvin, Louisiana, which provides coastal laboratory facilities to Louisiana universities and conducts research and educational programs in the marine sciences.
