Two Faculty Positions in  Marine Science

MSI logo

As part of a continuing expansion, The University of Texas at Austin's Marine Science Institute and Department of Marine Science invite applications for two new faculty positions (Assistant or Associate Professor) in: (1) Marine Biogeochemistry, particularly organic geochemistry, the global carbon cycle, and/or microbial biogeochemistry; and (2) Fish/Fisheries Biology, in areas that complement our existing strengths in larval fish studies, basic mariculture, and physiology.  We seek candidates with a Ph.D. and demonstrated expertise and innovative research who would benefit from the Institute's excellent shoreside facilities for experimental work and proximity to a variety of unique estuarine and coastal habitats (including the 185,000-acre Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve).  The positions include research (75% time), teaching (25%), and 9 months of state-funded salary support.  Successful applicants will have freedom to follow their research interests and opportunities to collaborate with a vibrant group of faculty spanning a variety of research areas in one of the largest research universities in the United States.

Candidates for either position must have a Ph.D. degree at the time of appointment and a strong research and publication record. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. The positions are based at the Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas. Faculty are expected to maintain a vigorous, externally funded research program, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students.

Applicants should send an application as a PDF file to facsearch@utlists.utexas.edu and have at least three letters of recommendation mailed to:  Search Committee Chair, The University of Texas Marine Science Institute, 750 Channel View Dr., Port Aransas, Texas 78373-5015. The application should contain a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests that indicates how the applicant's research activities would take advantage of the Institute's facilities and location (3 pages maximum), and a statement of teaching philosophy. Review of applications will start November 17, 2008 and continue through December 15, 2008.  Interviews are planned for January 2009.

The University of Texas at Austin values diversity and is committed to affirmative action and equal opportunity. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. UT Austin will make every effort to accommodate professional couples.

Background check conducted on application selected. The University of Texas at Austin is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

Faculty Position in Marine Biogeochemistry

The University of Texas at Austin Department of Marine Science and Marine Science Institute invite applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in Marine Biogeochemistry. We seek candidates with demonstrated expertise and innovative research in areas that complement our existing strengths in coastal and ocean geochemistry. The area of research is open, however we particularly encourage applications from individuals with interests in organic geochemistry, the global carbon cycle, and/or microbial biogeochemistry. The successful applicant will contribute to academic programs in the Department of Marine Science through teaching of graduate (and possibly undergraduate) courses, and will be encouraged to participate in research, teaching, and/or service activities through the Environmental Science Institute (www.esi.utexas.edu).

Our current senior staff in biogeochemistry and related areas includes:

Facilities and resources available to the successful candidate include:

  • immediate access to a variety of unique subtropical habitats

  • expansive seagrass meadows, salt marshes, sand flats, mangroves, hypersaline lagoons, channels, Gulf of Mexico

  • small boat fleet and trawler

  • 185,000-acre Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve

  • 300-ft pier with a 1200 sq. ft. lab at its base, a 150 sq. ft. instrument room on the end, and sampling platforms below

  • shared instrumentation facilities including

  • Finnigan isotope ratio mass spectrometer with elemental analyzer and GC interfaces

  • Shimadzu TOC-V/TNM-1 combination for simultaneous organic carbon and total nitrogen analyses

  • wet lab facilities with running seawater

Faculty Position in Fish/Fisheries Biology

The University of Texas at Austin Department of Marine Science and Marine Science Institute invite applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in Fish/Fisheries Biology. We seek candidates with demonstrated expertise and innovative research in areas that complement our existing strengths in larval fish studies, basic mariculture, and physiology. We have particular interest in field-oriented fisheries biology (including areas such as migration and transport, recruitment dynamics, and the linkages between environmental change and fish populations) and fish physiology/biochemistry (including areas such as fish growth and development, endocrinology, and nutrition). The successful candidate will help maintain continuity of our fish/fisheries biology research program and has the opportunity to expand the scope of research on the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve. The successful candidate will contribute to academic programs by teaching graduate and undergraduate courses.

Our current senior staff in fish/fisheries biology includes:

Our fish/fisheries research program enjoys a strong reputation and the generous support of an interested community of sport fishers. Facilities and resources available to the successful candidate include:

  • immediate access to larval, juvenile, and adult habitats for local fishes
