The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) is pleased to announce the annual Texas Bays and Estuaries Meeting (TBEM) for 2008.  The meeting will occur in Port Aransas, Texas

Texas Bays and Estuaries meeting, April 16-17, 2008  (Weds-Thurs)

SPECIAL SESSION THURSDAY ON THE 2008 TEXAS DINOPHYSIS DSP EVENT

Purpose:
The meeting will focus on work being done in the bays, estuaries and near-shore Gulf of Mexico.  It provides an opportunity for Texas scientists working in the coastal zone to share information, results and insights into our diverse coastal environment.  Both natural and social science research is welcome. 

Venue:
The meeting will be held at the Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas.  Talks will be held in the Auditorium located in the Visitor’s Center.  Information on the Institute and directions can be found at: www.utmsi.utexas.edu/institute/maps.htm

Program:
The meeting will start at 8:30 on Weds, and 8: 00 a.m. on Thurs. and continue until 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and continue until approximately noon on Thursday (the Dinophysis session is after lunch and is free).  There will be a plenary talk on both days. This year’s meeting will permit oral presentations and a limited number of poster presentations.  The meeting is informal and student-friendly.  There will be awards for best oral student presentation.

-Oral presentations: Digital projectors are available.  Electronic presentations are encouraged to facilitate the smooth flow of the meeting.  Internet access is available for presentations.

-Poster presentations: Posters must fit a 48 X 48 inch space. Priority will be given to student research. Presenters should check for further information after 4 April here as the size allotment may change depending on the number of poster submitted.

Abstract:
Abstracts are due 4 April 2008. Late abstracts may not be accepted, and you must register when you submit your abstract.  Please limit your abstract to 19 lines inclusive of title and affiliation. Margins should be one inch on all sides.  Use a Times New Roman font, size of 12, single space.  Titles should be in bolded normal case with authors and their affiliations listed afterwards.  The name of the presenter should be underlined.  Use special characters with care.  Every attempt will be made to convert them if they are corrupted,  but you are at our mercy for interpretation.  We will not edit typographical or grammatical errors.  If you are concerned about proper symbols, please include a PDF version as well.  Please send all abstracts to Tracy Villareal at t.villareal@mail.utexas.edu

 Abstracts must be submitted electronically during registration. Please indicate if the presenter is a student and if they wish to be considered for the best student presentation award. 

Sample title format:

Mapping of changes in oyster reef extent from 1913 to 2003 in Lavaca Bay, Texas. Josh Harper and James Simons, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; Tim Dellapenna and Jason Bronikowski, Texas A&M University-Galveston; William Sager and Mary Patch, Texas A&M University-College Station.

Oral Presentations:
Each talk will be allotted 15 minutes inclusive of 2-3 minutes for questions.  In the interest of time, speakers should arrange to upload their talks prior to the start so that they can be loaded onto the computer.  If you need a slide projector or overhead projector, email us well in advance so we can contact a local museum. 

Poster Presentations

Posters should be formatted to fit in a 44 X 44 inch space. Thumbtacks will be provided to put posters up. Presentors are expected to be at their posters from 5:45-6:30.

GENERAL INFORMATION 

Registration:

There is a $35.00 registration fee for the Bays and Estuaries meeting.

Early registration ends on April 4, 2007.  Late registration and registration at the door will be $50.00. Abstracts submitted after 4 April 2008 may not be accepted. Seating is limited in the auditorium and we must close registration if more than 200 people register.

Registration must be via our on-line form. If you are paying via credit card, you must download a hard copy, fill it out and fax it to Linda Fuiman at 361-749-6703. Please make sure you include the card type, card number, exp. date, 3 digit security code, and billing zip code. If paying by check, please make it payable to The University of Texas at Austin and note TBEM 2008 in the memo line. Early registration ends on 4 April 2008.

Housing:
 
 

Port Aransas has a wide variety of local accommodations for attendees who wish to overnight. A group rate is available at the Plantation Suites in Port Aransas (361-749-3866 of $69.00 per night 1-877-836-3866). The rate will expire on 1 April. 2008.. Attendees should reference the "UTMSI Tex Bays" and should reserve rooms as soon as possible due to the limited numbers that are available. Additional rates will be posted as soon as they are finalized.

Social events:
Lunch and a BBQ dinner is provided on Weds. as well as part of the registration cost. A cash bar will be available on Weds. during the BBQ. Any special meal requests should be noted on the registration form.

Meeting  program:
The meeting program and schedule will be distributed by email to registered participants and will be available on the conference website when it is finalized
