Wetlands Education Family Science Night

Science is about asking questions. Olsen Elementary in Port Aransas hosted a family science night that asked the question “How is a Wetland Family Education Night connected to the 3 R’s – Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic?”

Families of students in third-fifth grades were invited to attend this family science night to learn how these topics are related. The purpose of this event was to increase awareness of the economic and environmental value of local wetlands through some fun activities, while learning how the three R’s are integrated into the school’s science education. The sampling of classroom activities consisted of 13 interactive stations that involved TEKS based activities for the students and family members. The 14th station presented parents with copies of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for their child’s grade level. With cooperation from UTMSI staff and graduate students, parent volunteers, and community members, the evening was a great success.
