Izhar Khan’s work focuses on reproductive physiology and neuroendocrinology of marine fishes, using them as vertebrate models to investigate the mechanisms of neuroendocrine control of reproduction. His research has two avenues of practical impact: enhancing aquaculture productivity, and enhancing our understanding of the toxicity of environmental chemicals on neuroendocrine systems.

Dr. Khan uses local fish species such as cobia (Rachycentron canadum), spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus), common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) and Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) in his research, enabling FAML to transfer new tools and technology to commercial aquaculture producers in Texas. He aims to develop reliable spawning techniques to achieve year-round production, while improving larval survival through experimentation with various live feeds enrichments and weaning protocols.
