Advanced Technology Program of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board: "Development of Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) Aquaclture in Texas " (PIs: Joan Holt,

Izhar Khan); Khan’s section: "Induced Spawning of Cobia under Natural and Simulated

Environmental Conditions"

Cobia is a marine species with excellent aquaculture potential because of its rapid growth rate and excellent taste. The cobia project goals are to: develop reliable spawning techniques to achieve year round production, improve larval survival through experimentation with various live feeds enrichments and weaning protocols, and transfer this spawning and larval rearing technology to existing commercial aquaculture producers in Texas in order to encourage development of the industry.

Slow-release GnRH analog (GnRHa) implants and/or injections will be employed in an attempt to spawn cobia broodstock in captivity. We will attempt to advance gonadal maturation by slow release GnRHa implants after cycling cobia through shortened photoperiod-temperature cycles. The ability to spawn cobia outside their normal reproductive season will substantially enhance their aquaculture potential.
