Schweppe Lecture Series
Dr. Brian Fry
Louisiana State University
Thursday, July 10, 2008, 7:00 PM
Visitors Center Auditorium
"Global Climate Change"
There is no
scientific issue as contentious as global climate change. This lecture reviews
the more and less certain projections of climate change for the next 100 years,
projections that for example include 5m rises in sea level that would inundate
low-lying areas such as coastal Texas. A conclusion is that while science can
help guide thinking about complex issues such as climate change, scientific
certainty evolves only very slowly, usually over decades, and is usually quite
elusive. For climate change, the trick is learning how to make better long-term
decisions using the uncertain science of today.
Dr. Fry is a Professor at the
Coastal Ecology Institute, Louisiana State University. His research interests are in the areas of
Ecosystem and landscape ecology; Food webs; Biogeochemistry; and Stable
Isotopes.
