WHAT IS ISLAND TO ICE?

Island to Ice Educational Project connects students on Mustang Island, Texas and the North Island of New Zealand with research scientists traveling to McMurdo Station Antarctica. Students will have the opportunity to:
  • Meet the scientists during classroom visits
  • Follow the researchers’ Antarctic experience in an online journal
  • Ask questions of researchers about their Antarctic experience via email
  • Conduct science activities and lessons with Antarctic themes, and compare their results with those obtained at partner locations
  • Send a "traveling activity" along with researchers to the Antarctic continent

This project will be conducted during November and December of 2004 and is a collaboration between:

  • University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) GK-12 Program, Port Aransas Texas
  • UTMSI Antarctic research scientists from Dr. Paul Montagnas’ laboratory
  • H.G. Olsen Elementary, Brundrett Middle School, and Port Aransas High School in Port Aransas, Texas
  • Papamoa School in Papamoa, North Island, New Zealand
