Over the course of the next two and a half months, I will be living and working on Bird Island, South Georgia at a research station supported and operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). I will be joined in this experience by two other researchers from the United States, Dr. Randall Davis from Texas A&M University - Galveston and William Hagey from Pisces Design in San Diego, California. Bird Island has a rich diversity of wildlife which makes it an |

ideal location for studying seals and seabirds. The objective of our project is to learn more about the behavior of male Antarctic fur seals using animal-borne video cameras and data loggers. The video cameras allow us to record the animal's underwater behavior, while the data loggers will allow us to reconstruct the animal's movements in three-dimensions and also gather information about the environment in which the animal lives (ex: light, temperature, salinity). |
